Artist Roger Torbert Opening Reception

July 13, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join us for the opening reception for Broken Pieces featuring the unique works of Roger Torbert.  To create his paper weavings, Roger takes things that he finds, old and new — books, letters, pictures, paper — and re imagines them to create designs, patterns and shapes that tell a new story. A story with a nod of respect to the past object and a bold assertion of something new. Subjects include local landmarks, vintage photographs, and iconic symbols

Artist Statement:
Each of our lives is like a canvas. Sometimes our canvas is marked by others and sometimes by ourselves. A wonderful thing about art is that we can take things that are not as we wish and remake them into something more than we ever imagined.  We can repaint the canvases which we are given and make them true beautiful reflections of ourselves.
In my work, I take things that I find, old and new — books, letters, pictures, paper — and re imagine them to create designs, patterns and shapes that tell a new story. A story with a nod of respect to the past object and a bold assertion of something new.
Bio:
Roger Torbert is the father of two awesome kids, Alex (25) and Tulley (16) and is the Vice President of Education at the Birmingham Zoo. Roger has been ‘arting’ seriously since 2014. His chosen medium, paper weaving, actually evolved from watching elementary art teachers show young students to weave using strips of paper.
